RENOWNED PHYSICIST LAWRENCE M. KRAUSS TO SPEAK AT QUARK MATTER 2001 CONFERENCE Acclaimed Author and Theorist to Lecture on Importance of Science STONY BROOK, N.Y., December 19, 2000 Krauss's lecture, "An Atom From Long Island," will take place on the first day of the conference, Monday, January 15, at 8:00 PM at the Staller Center for the Arts on the Stony Brook campus, providing an opportunity for the public to gain an appreciation for science and its relevance to Long Island. The lecture is free and open to the public. Krauss, whose studies have included the early universe, the nature of dark matter, general relativity, and neutrino astrophysics, is the author of several acclaimed popular books including The Fifth Essence: The Search for Dark Matter in the Universe (1989), which was named Astronomy Book of the Year by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and Fear of Physics (1993), which has been translated into 12 languages. His national best-seller The Physics of Star Trek (1995) sold over 200,000 copies and was a selection of five major book clubs including the Book of the Month Club. It is being translated into 13 languages and is the basis for a production by the BBC. A U.S. television production, narrated by Krauss, also is planned. His most recent work is Quintessence: The Mystery of the Missing Mass (2000). In addition, Krauss has just been named the winner of the prestigious Lillienthal Prize for 2001, awarded by the American Physical Society for the most outstanding contribution to physics.
